March Maintenance: The 5-Point Post-Winter Structural Checkup
March Maintenance: The 5-Point Post-Winter Structural Checkup
As the March winds begin to shift and the first signs of spring emerge across Hampton Roads, it’s easy to focus solely on landscaping and curb appeal. However, here in Virginia, the transition from freezing winter nights to humid spring days can take a hidden toll on your home’s bones. The freeze-thaw cycle is notorious for expanding small cracks into costly structural issues.
At K.M. Cash Construction, we believe that a home is only as beautiful as it is sound. March is the perfect bridge month to step outside, assess how your property weathered the winter, and ensure your foundation is ready for the heavy spring rains ahead.
Here is our 5-point structural checkup to keep your home healthy and secure for 2026.
1. Evaluate Grading and Foundation Drainage
Winter snow and ice melt can saturate the soil around your home, leading to hydrostatic pressure against your foundation. Walk around your perimeter and look for:
- Low Spots: Areas where the soil has settled or dipped near the foundation.
- Reverse Grading: Ground that slopes toward your home rather than away.
- Standing Water: Puddles that linger more than 24 hours after a rain.
Ensuring water flows away from your home is the #1 way to prevent foundation cracks and basement dampness.
2. Inspect the "Envelope" for Moisture Traps
High winds and winter storms can loosen siding or damage the sealants around your home’s exterior. If you have 'winterized' your home well you should expect little issues with your siding, trim, and window casings, but it is still important check for:
- Soft Spots: Press on wood trim to check for rot caused by trapped winter moisture.
- Popped Nails: Siding that has buckled or pulled away during temperature shifts.
- Cracked Caulking: Dry winter air often causes caulk to shrink and pull away, creating an entry point for spring pests and rain.

3. Clear and Calibrate the Gutter System
You likely cleared your gutters in the fall, but winter debris, twigs, shingle grit, and salt, can create new clogs. March is the time to:
- Check Downspout Extensions: Ensure they are still attached and directing water at least 5-10 feet away from the foundation.
- Look for Sagging: Heavy ice loads over the winter can bend gutter hangers, causing water to overflow rather than drain.
- Verify Pitch: Ensure the gutters are still tilted toward the downspouts so water doesn't sit stagnant.

4. Examine the Roof and Attic Space
You don't always need a ladder to spot winter damage. Use binoculars to check your roof for missing shingles or damaged flashing around chimneys and vents. Then, head up to the attic to look for:
- Daylight Peeking Through: A sign of a structural gap or missing shingle.
- Water Stains: Even small yellow or brown spots on the underside of the roof deck indicate a slow leak that will worsen with April showers.
- Compressed Insulation: If winter leaks occurred, damp insulation loses its R-value and can lead to mold growth.
5. Check Decks and Outdoor Structures
Before you fire up the grill for the first time this season, inspect the structural integrity of your outdoor living spaces. Winter moisture is the enemy of wood and masonry.
- Check Joists and Hangers: Look for rust on metal connectors or wood rot where the deck meets the house.
- Inspect Masonry: Check brick steps or crawl space entries for spalling (where the face of the brick or mortar flakes off due to freezing).
- Test the Railings: Ensure they haven't loosened during winter storms.
Plan Ahead for Your 2026 Projects
March is also the strategic time to begin planning larger structural upgrades or renovations. Whether you are considering a new addition, a reinforced deck, or a complete exterior refresh, whatever the new project is, starting the conversation now ensures your project is on the books before the summer rush.
